Mechanical Engineering Department

Mechanical Engineering is vital to the economic development of any industry. It plays an important role in the production of mechanical and thermal energies. It is involved in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment in nearly all types of industries which include transportation industry, refrigeration and air conditioning industry, power plants and water distillation, heavy industry, petroleum and chemical industries, textiles and food industries, building materials industries and many others. The mechanical engineers are involved in the fields of design, production, operation, maintenance, management, research and development.

The department has regular academic program of Bachelor of Engineering courses in Mechanical Engineering with three specializations:
1- Applied Mechanics
2- Production and Industrial Engineering
3- Thermal Engineering.

The courses are tailored in such a manner as to provide sound basic knowledge in the field of Mechanical Engineering and Basic Sciences. After the third year the student can select any one of the areas mentioned above, to enable them to obtain some specialization in order to have better chance in the work market. The recent developments in various areas of Mechanical Engineering are included in the course curricula, which are framed keeping in mind the needs of industry. The final year students are required to take up a project work, which can reflect the ability of student to solve field problems from industry.

The curriculum also requires that the third and fourth year students are sent for practical training for a period of one month to various industries. The Department has the following Laboratories:
1- Heat Transfer and Air conditioning Laboratory
2- Internal combustion Engine Laboratory
3- Fluid Mechanics and Machines Laboratory
4- Dynamics and Vibration Laboratory
5- Strength of Materials Laboratory
6- Production and Metrology Laboratory
7- Materials Science laboratory.
